Summary (500 words) As part of the Interreg-Med GARDEN project, EStà organized a closed workshop on “Food System and Climate: the Logistics of the Last Mile” on 16 May 2025 in Milan. With 15 participants from institutions, research, and social enterprises, the event addressed challenges and solutions for sustainable urban logistics, aiming to contribute to future policy recommendations within the GARDEN project.
Detailed content Within the framework of the Interreg - Med GARDEN project, EStà organised an invitation-only workshop on the theme ‘Food System and Climate: the Logistics of the Last Mile’ held in Cascina Cuccagna, Milan, on Friday 16 May 2025 from 14:30 to 18:00.

Participants were invited with an eye to a multistakeholder perspective that included: representatives of institutions on different administrative scales (present were a representative of the Municipality of Milan, the Province of Varese, and the Piedmont Region), representatives of CSOs and social enterprises involved in the logistics issue, and representatives from the world of university research. A total of 15 people were present.

During the workshop, EStà presented the GARDEN project and its achievements to date, accompanying the exhibition with evidence, lessons learnt, good practices and suggestions on the climate impact of logistics in the food system, from projects and studies carried out by EStà and invited organisations. The presentations were the initial stimulus for a subsequent project workshop during which those present examined in an interactive and participatory manner both the main challenges that the topic of last-mile logistics poses in their experiences and the best solutions identified. Starting with the analysis and prioritisation of solutions, those present discussed what the enabling conditions are for those solutions to be implemented and what the task of the institutions can be in facilitating the process.
The elements that emerged during the workshop were set by EStà for later use as input for future policy recommendations that the association will contribute within the actions of the GARDEN project.
